College students celebrate at HE Graduation
On Friday 21st October 2016, the latest group of Higher Education (HE) students from Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) celebrated their graduation at The Hilton, St George’s Park.
In keeping with tradition, the students wore full academic dress and paraded through the grounds of St. George’s Park prior to the celebrations. The caps and gowns set the scene for the formal proceedings, which created a buzz of excitement among graduands and guests.
During the ceremony at The Hilton, students were presented with certificates to mark their success in a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including honours degrees; foundation degrees; higher national diplomas; higher national certificates and professional qualifications. Students’ families and a range of VIP guests joined the celebrations to mark the end of their courses, as well as the beginning of the new opportunities that graduating can bring.
Contemporary Creative Arts Practice student, Jamie Gilman, was presented with the overall HE Learner of the Year for his achievements throughout his studies. Jamie commented: “During the course I was a New Blood winner at the D&AD Show in London, which led to me getting my job at a prestigious London studio, Beyond Words. The course gave me lots of opportunities to work on live briefs and projects which have set me up well for my career. I have always had an interest in maths so would like to do some work in data visualisation in the future.”
The ceremony also saw the College presenting Patron of Construction and Sustainability and Managing Director at St. Modwen’s Homes, Dave Smith, and Deputy Managing Director of Toyota Manufacturing (UK) Ltd, Tony Walker, with honorary fellowships.
Burton and South Derbyshire College offers a wide range of Higher Education courses run in partnership with and accredited by local universities, including Staffordshire University. Studying Higher Education at BSDC provides students with a cost effective route to gaining a university level qualification.
Chief Executive and Principal Dawn Ward, CBE said: “The HE Graduation Ceremony is a highlight of the College calendar. It has never been more important for people to ensure they have the high level skills necessary for success in the world of work.
