Exhibition celebrates the wonder of The National Forest

Photography students at Burton and South Derbyshire College recently exhibited their work at the Brewhouse Arts Centre as part of a professional exhibition, exploring the wonder of the National Forest.

The Photo Canopy project aims to provide residents and supporters of the National Forest with stimulating and vibrant learning and development experiences. The project uses photography to link artists, students, geographical location and the rich landscape of the National Forest.

The exhibition featured work by photographer, Aaron Yeandle, open call artist, Emma J Lannie and a consolidation of work from staff and students and staff from Burton and South Derbyshire College. Members of the local community also contributed, exhibiting work produced in a series of free workshops.

During the project, photography students at BSDC had the opportunity to work alongside professional photographers, gaining an insight into their practice. The exhibition showcased a range of inspiring work, including photographs, self-published books, video and text.

The National Forest occupies an area of around 200 square miles and spans the counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire. The Photo Canopy project has been an opportunity to explore a variety of themes linked to the National Forest, including its undefined borders, its history and its evolving landscape.

The exhibition was the first part of two shows. The second show, which will take place next year, will feature David Severn and Marie Holliday, who will be exhibiting alongside student work and previous archived pieces.

Chris Beech, Director of Creative and Digital Industries at Burton and South Derbyshire College commented: “The Photo Canopy Exhibition is a fantastic example of partnership projects giving learners professional experience within the creative industries. This project shows the importance of inviting artists to collaborate on projects, bringing a fresh perspective and ensuring students look at their home with fondness and wonder.”
