BSDC nursery maintains five-star status

Childcare staff and students at Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) are celebrating after the College’s nursery once again achieved the highest 5-star rating from Environmental Health.

Environmental Health inspections ensure public spaces are safe, clean and hygienic, with strict checks on food safety, hygiene standards and infection control measures to protect both children and staff.

The College’s nursery has proudly retained its 5-star rating for more than two years, consistently exceeding hygiene and cleanliness standards while meeting all regulations and best practices.

During an Environmental Health assessment, inspectors review areas such as food safety by checking preparation spaces, storage practices and allergen management. They also carry out infection control checks to confirm that handwashing facilities and hygiene procedures are in place when caring for children.

Waste management processes are assessed to ensure safe disposal methods are used to prevent contamination, and inspectors also evaluate environmental factors including ventilation, temperature and lighting to make sure the nursery provides a healthy and supportive setting for children.

Located on campus, the nursery offers a warm and welcoming environment for young children, while also providing vital support to students who are parents by giving them peace of mind that their children are cared for in a safe, nurturing space.
