Keeping the young people and vulnerable adults studying here safe is something we take very seriously. We’ve got policies in place to ensure safer recruitment and to deal with any allegations.
- It’s something we have clear guidelines on for our staff, covering:
- Lines of communication
- Language - verbal and written
- Physical contact
- Working alone with learners
- Behaviour and attitude
- Relationships
- Using sanctions
- Whistle blowing
- What should I do if I’m concerned about a learner?
- Don’t promise confidentiality
- Tell a member of the Safeguarding Team immediately – just ask Reception who’ll locate someone
- Tell the learner what you’re doing and why
- Don’t investigate
- Make a record of any conversation
- Guidelines for visitors: help us keep our learners safe
- Please make sure you wear your visitor/contractor lanyard at all time and keep to the boundaries of the purpose of your visit
- Please make sure you’re escorted by a staff member at all times
- Please be mindful of your own behaviours in relation to learners
- Please act promptly if you see or are approached by a learner in distress
- Sexual Harassment
We are committed to creating a safe and respectful community, with zero tolerance on sexual harassment.
- We are dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive environment for everyone.
- Any form of sexual harassment is unacceptable and will not be ignored.
- If you experience or witness harassment, support and reporting options are available.
- We actively promote awareness and training to prevent harassment and support a positive culture.
For more information on sexual harassment, go to our Sexual Harassment page. To download our Safeguarding Policy, go to the College Policies section.
- Operation Encompass
Burton and South Derbyshire College is proud to be part of Operation Encompass, a national initiative that supports young people who may be affected by domestic abuse. This partnership between education settings and local police ensures that, where appropriate, the College is informed before the start of the next working day if a student has been involved in or exposed to a domestic incident. Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), trained as the College’s Key Adult, receives this information in confidence and ensures timely, appropriate support is offered to the student. This approach helps us provide a safe, supportive environment and respond sensitively to individual needs.
