  • Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Burton and South Derbyshire College is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

1.2.2 Captions (Pre-recorded)

Captions will need to be provided for all videos (for example the case study videos hosted on Vimeo). The Vimeo player we use will show captions where available.

1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum)

Most of the bright colours used on the courses section do not meet the minimum contrast ratios.

We are currently working on changing the design of these pages so the colours can be used in a more accessible manner.

Disproportionate burden

3.2.2 On Input, 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value

The contact page ( contains a form but there is no submit button (a normal button is used).  The form should be provided with a submit button to maximize predictability.

This form is controlled by the plugin (Breezing Forms) so we don’t have control over the HTML output and are unable to change the button type. Redeveloping the form is outside the scope of this project.

The plugin is kept up to date and will change the button type if the option becomes available in the future.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and documents

Many of our older PDFs and Word documents do not meet accessibility standards – for example, they may not be structured so they’re accessible to a screen reader. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2 (name, role value).

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will aim to meet accessibility standards.

We are working on new ways of presenting our website banners on the home page to improve accessibility.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We are working hard to improve on any issues and our accessibility compliance is reviewed regularly.
