    • Course overview

      This course will give you the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of the performing arts industry. There are 7 units covered on the programme, these offer exploration within both dance and acting.

      You will be involved in a range of performances which will develop your skills as a performer, as well as learning about other roles and practically becoming part of the backstage crew for a performance. 

      We previously worked with professional performers and companies within the industry to provide excellent work experience and workshop opportunities for dancers and actors. These include Amy Dowden from Strictly Come Dancing, Vanhulle Dance Theatre, Ellis Theatre Art, Nottingham TV and Film, Flexus Dance Company, Imagine Ballet Theatre, Scare Acting, One Dance UK, National Brewery Centre, National Adventure Farm, Alton Towers, Derby Theatre and The Brewhouse Arts Centre.

    • Entry requirements

      Applicants will be expected to have a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or an equivalent qualification.

      All applicants will be invited to attend and participate in an on-campus workshop audition.

      Applicants’ performance at our workshop auditions will be strictly and impartially judged against an approved marking rubric by a panel of no fewer than two vocational specialists. Following the audition, all applicants will receive personalised feedback on the outcome of their audition. Should for any reason an applicant’s performance not meet the prerequisite performance standard, then upon request applicants will be permitted one additional audition attempt per academic year.

    • How will I be assessed?

      The course is split into 65% practical and 35% theory, and all written work you undertake will underpin your practical knowledge. You will also have the opportunity to perform in large productions, take part in professional workshops and undertake work experience. 

    • What can I do next?

      Typically, students will progress onto our Level 3 Performing Arts courses, our Working in the Performing Arts course or an apprenticeship.

      Previous students have gone on to study at the following vocational schools: Midland Dance Academy, Stella Mann College of Performing Arts, Bird College, Rose Bruford College, The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, Urdang Academy and London Central School of Speech and Drama. We also have links and ties with agencies and talent scouts, with opportunities to join their books and gain exposure and experience within the industry.

    • English & Maths

      Being confident with maths and English is not only important for everyday life but it’s expected as standard in the world of work. We’re committed to ensuring our learners have the full range of skills that universities and employers are looking for. If you haven’t yet achieved grade 4 (grade C) in English and maths and are aged between 16-18 years, you will continue to study these by undertaking a GCSE re-sit programme or appropriate stepping stone qualifications in addition to your vocational learning programme.

    • Uniform

      As part of your course, you will be required to purchase an industry related uniform and/or kit. Please find details of industry related uniforms in the Student Life section of the website.

      If you live independently and are in receipt of certain means tested benefits in your own right or live in a low-income household, you may be eligible for one of our grants.     • Work Experience

      We believe that the best way to get a real sense of your chosen industry is to try it out for yourself! That’s why all of our full time study programme courses include relevant industry work experience. It shows future employers you’ve got what it takes and are motivated to succeed. Not only does it look good on your CV, but it’s an opportunity to build up your confidence and industry contacts. Our Employment Hub works with over 500 local employers to ensure all students on full time study programmes have a high quality and meaningful work placement. So not only do you gain valuable work experience, it helps you decide on your future options, from choosing the right university course to finding the right employer. Work experience is a chance to you to spend time on an employer’s premises, observing the workplace, undertaking tasks (under supervision) alongside team members and learning the skills and behaviours needed at work. It’s designed to bridge the gap between your education and the world of work. It can help you to become aware of jobs you have not previously thought of, inform your career choices, develop your skills and help you gain the attitudes and behaviours expected at work.
