Course overview

The Top-up Degree in Health and Social Care is an advanced programme designed for learners who have completed a Foundation Degree or equivalent qualification in health and social care. Offered in partnership with University of Staffordshire, this programme aims to deepen expertise and enhance career prospects within the sector with modules in contemporary issues, social policy and leadership and management.

Building on foundational knowledge from Levels 4 and 5, the top-up degree addresses local and national workforce demands and aligns with government guidelines and industry standards. The programme meets the QAA Benchmark Statements for Health Studies and Social Policy and Administration, preparing graduates for professional roles.

The Top-up Degree features a 20-credit structure, updated content, contemporary delivery methods, and innovative assessment approaches. Key modules include: Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care (20 credits): Delivered in the first semester, this module focuses on essential leadership and management skills, covering strategic planning, organisational behavior, and change management. Contemporary Issues in Health and Social Care (20 credits): Also in the first semester, this module explores current and emerging sector issues, critically analysing challenges, policies, and practices. The Extended Health and Social Care Study Project (40 credits): Spanning both semesters, this extensive project involves independent research on a chosen topic, developing research skills and applying theoretical knowledge to practical issues. Human Factors and Safe Practice in Health and Social Integrated Care (20 credits): Delivered in the second semester, this module examines the impact of human factors on safe practice, covering risk management, patient safety, and human behaviour. Housing, Homelessness, and Supporting Multiple Disadvantage (20 credits): Also in the second semester, this module addresses housing, homelessness, and multiple disadvantages, exploring strategies to support vulnerable populations.

16-18 School Leaver
- If you are aged 16, 17 or 18 and not currently in full-time education with another provider, your full-time course will be provided for free.
- If you are aged 19 to 24 years and have an active EHCP (Education Health and Care Plan) with high-cost Additional Learning Support needs and agreed local authority funding, your full-time course will be provided for free.

19-23 Educational Entitlement
- You are aged 19 to 23 years at the start of your course, and do not hold a full Level 2 qualification and are looking to study a funded eligible, full Level 2 programme.
- You are aged 19 to 23 years at the start of your course, having previously only completed qualifications at Level 2 or below, and looking to study a funded eligible, first full Level 3 programme.
- You are aged 19 years and over (excluding apprentices), looking to study GCSE English or Maths, and do not have grades 4 - 9 or A* - C in these subjects already

19+ Part Funded

Part fee concessions are available on eligible government funded programmes where the individual meets the following criteria:
- You are aged 19 or older on the 31^st August on the year that the course starts
- You are looking to study a funded eligible course at level 2 or below which meets the skills needs of the local labour market
- You do not earn less than the earnings threshold set by the Department for Education (£25,750)
Please note, all learners must meet residency criteria set by organisations responsible for providing funding.
19+ Fully Funded

Full fee concession is available on eligible government funded programmes at level 2 where the individual meets the following criteria:
- You earn less than the earnings threshold set by the Department for Education (£25,750)
- You are unemployed, looking for work and on active benefits (JSA; ESA; UC) Proof that you are in receipt of these benefits needs to be seen.
Full fee concession is available on eligible government funded programmes at level 3 as part of the Free Courses for Jobs offer where the individual meets the following criteria:
- You earn less than the earnings threshold set by the Department for Education (£25,750)
- You are unemployed, looking for work and on active benefits (JSA; ESA; UC) Proof that you are in receipt of these benefits needs to be seen
You must be enrolling on a qualification listed in the Department for Education (DfE) National Skills Fund Qualification offer. View our National Skills Fund page here.

Full fee concession is available on GCSE English or Maths where the individual meets the following criteria:
- You do not have grades 4 - 9 or A* - C in these subjects already.
24+ Fully Funded

Full fee concession is available on eligible government funded programmes where you can evidence that you earn less than the earnings threshold set by the Department for Education (£26,800) as part of the Free Courses for Jobs offer.

Full Cost

Where an individual does not meet the eligibility criteria to receive a full or part concession, or the programme which they wish to study is not eligible to receive government funding then the full cost of the programme must be covered by the individual.

This course will be assessed through coursework including essays, presentations, reports and projects.

- With over 350 different career opportunities within different health and social care settings, a Degree in Health and Social Care (FdSc) provides the underpinning expertise, skills and knowledge required for a wide variety of work in these settings, including public or private sector, working for charities in the UK or abroad, Public Health analytics, Management in social/community settings, working in research centers, public health, health promotion, NHS support services, social services, housing associations, private care homes, offender services, drug and alcohol services, local authority and education support. The provision of health and social care, such as working with vulnerable adults, children and the elderly.
- Management and administration positions within health and social care organisations.
- Public health and community development-related roles, such as health promotion, public information and health training.
- Personnel and resource management posts in the private sector, local authorities and voluntary organisations.
- Policy-oriented work (including lobbying and advocacy) in the NHS, local government or voluntary sector.
- Research and evaluation of health and social care services.
There is also an opportunity to study a masters.
