Course overview
In the history section of this course, we explore aspects of the Industrial Revolution with a combination of speakers and visits to local heritage sites. The afternoon start times are flexible due to the morning visits.
COST
The five session programme is £100 (£20 per session).
SESSION 1 - WEDNESDAY 24TH JANUARY
9:15am - 10:30am - History - Industrial Heritage
Sir Richard Arkwright & Cromford Mills with Cliff Lea.
11:00am - 12:15pm - The Arkwright Family
Spinners of Fortune with Cliff Lea.
1:30pm - 3:30pm - Book Discussion
Persuasion (1818) by Jane Austen with Robin Wood. We trace the fortunes of Anne Elliot and her family with settings in Bath and Lyme Regis.
SESSION 2 - WEDNESDAY 28TH FEBRUARY
9:00am - 12:00pm - Industrial Heritage History
Visit to Cromford Mills with a guided tour. Sir Richard Arkwright’s original mill.
1:30pm - 3:30pm - Book Discussion
The Island of Missing Trees (2021) by Elif Shafak. A story concerning the troubles in Cyprus in the 1970’s leading to partition and the consequences for both Greek and Turkish families.
SESSION 3 - WEDNESDAY 10TH APRIL
9:00am - Industrial Heritage History
Visit to the Framework Knitters Museum at Ruddington. We have a guided tour of the knitters’ cottages and see the actual working framework knitting machines. There is also an on-site café.
2:00pm - 3:30pm - Book Discussion
The Power & The Glory (1940) by Graham Greene. This novel explores the themes of sin, redemption and grace with a flawed hero and is set in Mexico in the 1920’s.
SESSION 4 - WEDNESDAY 8TH MAY
9:00am - 12:15pm - Industrial Heritage
Visit to Derby Museum of Making in the old Silk Mill built by John Lombe in the eighteenth century.
1:30pm - 3:30pm - Book Discussion
Shrines of Gaiety (2022) by Kate Atkinson with Robin Wood.
SESSION 5 - WEDNESDAY 5TH JUNE
9:00am - 3:30pm - History
Industrial Heritage Day visit to Blists Hill Victorian town and Ironbridge.
