      This programme is designed to re-ignite your passion for learning and try something new! It provides an opportunity to take part in a variety of subjects and hear from expert speakers in a sociable and friendly group setting.

      SESSION 1 - WEDNESDAY 11TH & 18TH SEPTEMBER 

      9:15am - 10:30am - Crime

      A Policeman’s Lot with Paul Hudson. A humorous and interesting insight from a policeman’s perspective.

      11:00am - 12:15pm - Industrial History

      James Brindley: Britain’s Canal Pioneer with Cliff Lea. 2016 marked the tercentenary of the birth of Derbyshire-born James Brindley. This was the man who was to start the canal building frenzy which transformed transport of goods in Britain, enabling the Industrial Revolution to take hold.

      1:30pm - 3:30pm - History

      The Day Parisians ate the Zoo with Jackie Morgan. We learn about the siege of Paris in the Nineteenth century

      SESSION 2 - WEDNESDAY 9TH & 16TH OCTOBER 

      9:15am - 10:30am - Current Issues 

      Climate Change with Dennis Fletcher (Cabinet member for Climate Change & Environment – East Staffs Borough Council). What Parish, Borough & County Councils have done and plan to do and what we can do to combat climate change.

      11:00am - 12:15pm - Local History

      The History of Ashbourne with John Titterton. We look at some unusual history of this local market town

      1:30pm - 3:30pm - Environment 

      The Concept of Place with Helen Young. How place is defined and represented in art, poetry & music

      SESSION 3 - WEDNESDAY 13TH & 20TH NOVEMBER 

      9:15am - 10:30am - Remembrance 

      Margaret Bullock from National Memorial Arboretum. We learn about the beginnings of the Arboretum and the meaning and symbolism of some of the key memorials.

      11:00am - 12:15pm - Culture

      The Shipping Forecast with Vanessa Tissington. Fascinating names such as German Bight, Dogger Bank and Fastnet

      12:15pm - 1:30pm - LUNCH IN THE MULBERRY RESTAURANT

      1:30pm - 3:30pm - Science

      We look at lasers with Dave Bullimore. What are they and how are they used?

      SESSION 4 - WEDNESDAY 11TH DECEMBER

      9:15am - 12:00pm 

      More International Folk Dancing with welcome return visit of Gill Morran

      12:00pm - 1:30pm - POOLED PARTY LUNCH

      1:30pm - 3:30pm 

      General Knowledge Quiz with Robin and Terry Wood. Teams of maximum six and points mean prizes!
