Course overview
Maths and English has long been the gold standard for both further education and employment. A high grade pass (C/4) in maths and English is one of the most common employment requirements for many sectors. At BSDC, we have a great team of experienced and innovative staff who will help to support you in every step of your learner journey.
This qualification will require a two-hour classroom based taught session per week. We have the right study option to suit everyone’s busy schedules and we have classes available both in the day and evening throughout the week.
Learners studying maths and English at BSDC will not only receive high quality classroom based teaching, but we have a fantastic online and digital package to help support you outside of the classroom. This includes access to Canvas, our virtual learning environment where you will find extension activities and resources from your classroom learning to bespoke your learner journey, which include access to practice exam papers and more.
As a learner at BSDC you will also have access to Century. We recognise that many learners have individual gaps in knowledge that need to specific support. Century will create a unique path of resources, learning materials and assessments for you to complete in your own time with an app for phones and tablets to make your learning even more accessible.
The difference between GCSE and Functional Skills
Functional Skills are steppingstone qualifications that help you to learn the foundation skills required to be successful in everyday life and work. Many learners work towards a functional skill to gain a nationally recognised qualification before undertaking a GCSE.
Don’t worry if you are unsure what course to apply for. When you apply to study an English and maths course at the College, the team will help determine which is the most appropriate level and course for you to achieve through an assessment of your current knowledge.
Please note: If you have not yet achieved a grade 4 /C or above then you will be able to study GCSEs or Functional skills free of charge. Any learner wishing to study who has already achieved a grade 4 /C previously will be subject to tuition fee charged at £724.
