Beauty students hone their skills for WorldSkills competition

    23 June 2022

Sandra Berganska and Taylor Marriott, two Beauty students at Burton and South Derbyshire College, have been honing their skills to take part in WorldSkills Beauty national qualifier competitions.

The students were selected for the next stage of the competition after passing online passive heats. The first student to compete was Level 2 Beauty learner, Sandra Berganska who took part in a regional heat at North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College where she had to perform a manicure, facial and leg wax under the watchful eye of WorldSkills judges.

Meanwhile, Level 3 Beauty student, Taylor Marriott was next to compete at Walsall College where she performed a back treatment/massage, make-up and manicure to the highest possible standard.

WorldSkills supports young people across the world via competition-based training, assessment and benchmarking, with members’ national teams ultimately testing their ability to achieve world-class standards in the biennial ‘Skills Olympics’.

The WorldSkills Beauty competition focuses on the role and tasks of a beauty therapy practitioner carrying out a range of services which reflect both current and traditional standards, plus current industry requirements. Competitors are also tested on health and safety, exceptional client care and communication skills.

Level 3 Beauty student, Taylor Marriott said: “Taking part in the WorldSkills competition is a great opportunity and will look good on my CV. I have always been interested in the beauty industry and I’ve worked in salons since I was 16. I’m now working at Hoar Cross Hall as a Beauty Therapist alongside my studies. I love my job; it’s very hands-on and I like the idea of making people feel better.”

Heather Jones, Curriculum Team Leader for Hair and Beauty said: “WorldSkills competitions are an opportunity for students to demonstrate their specialist skills and technical knowledge to the highest level. Competing is a great way for learners to gain experience in working to a professional standard and with creative flair in a high pressure situation.”
