Students gain an insight into games development!
16 January 2023
Computer Science (Programming and App Development) students at Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) were recently visited by the team from independent studio, Playtonic Games, who provided an insight into the games development industry and the careers available.
During the visit, representatives from Playtonic spoke about their experiences working in games development and shared details of their previous projects, including the crowdfunded and record-breaking title, ‘Yooka-Laylee’.
Students were then able to ask questions they had about the industry, including the process of creating a video game and the best way to secure work experience and job roles. After the Q&A session, students showcased projects they have been working on to members of the team, who provided feedback and advice.
Fran Williams, Head of People for Playtonic Games and Patron of Professional Curriculum at BSDC took part in the visit and commented: “The students were extremely enthusiastic and were interested to find out more about the work we do and the career options available to them in programming and app development. During our visit, we gave them feedback on their projects, which was great to be able to do. I want each student to feel they have support and someone they can go to, who will help them break down any limiting beliefs, so they know they can achieve any dream they set out to achieve.”
The Programming and App Development course at BSDC prepares students for a career in the IT industry, helping them to develop practical skills and knowledge of programming, software engineering and app development, whilst combining essential project management skills. This includes programming concepts, game programming, cyber security, data analysis, and creating websites and mobile and desktop apps. Students also have the opportunity to work on projects for external clients, gaining valuable real-world experience.
Michael Lynch, Course Leader in Computing at BSDC said: “We were delighted to welcome the team from Playtonic Games who gave our programming and app development students an invaluable insight into working in the IT industry. We’re proud of our industry links and network of patrons, who play an important role as motivators, role models and industry experts as students prepare to enter the world of work.”
