BSDC repurposes labs to support sustainability goals

Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) recently completed the refurbishment of its office spaces using recycled materials, as part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency.

The project made extensive use of materials from the College’s former science laboratories, which were decommissioned after the labs were no longer in use. Prioritising the recycling and reuse of resources throughout the refurbishment not only advanced the College’s sustainability objectives but also resulted in notable cost efficiencies.

Each new office space features a kitchenette constructed from recycled components salvaged from the science laboratories, including cupboards and worktops. This sustainable approach generated savings of approximately £2,000 per kitchenette, resulting in total savings of at least £6,000 across the project.

In addition, bar stools and other furniture from the former science labs have been repurposed for use in curriculum teaching areas, ensuring that valuable resources continue to be utilised whilst avoiding unnecessary waste.

This initiative reinforces Burton and South Derbyshire College’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility. As a recognised Carbon Neutral Organisation and proud signatory of the SDG Accord, the College continues to embed sustainable practices across all areas of its operations, with a clear target to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
