BSDC Chair of the Corporation Awarded OBE in Queen’s Honours

29 December 2018

Chair of the Corporation at Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC), Everton Burke has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours. He has dedicated most of his career to working with young people and has been given the award for his services to Further Education.

Everton has been Chair of the Corporation at BSDC for 6 years. During this tenure, he has given an unwavering commitment to the College, contributing significantly to its excellent quality provision, outstanding financial health and continually expanding employer base. He has provided strong and effective leadership to the Board of Governors, ensuring he is involved in all aspects of College life and becoming an inspirational role model to the many young people studying at the College.

Starting his College career as a Catering Lecturer, Everton has contributed significantly to the hospitality sector through his role in many national working groups, advising on qualification adoption and development for the catering industry.  He has been a champion of localised social mobility through the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects to young Afro Caribbean students, and was a founding member of the Caribbean Reference Group commissioned by West Midlands Police leading up to the 2012 summer Olympic Games. He sat as a magistrate for nearly 20 years and was an active blood donor, giving over 80 donations and securing the title Emerald Award Donor.

Commenting on receiving the honour, Everton said: “I am taken aback at receiving this wonderful honour. I have always had a strong desire to play an active role in the Further Education sector. Giving school leavers the skills, qualifications and competencies they need to secure meaningful and lasting employment, and being a role model for black and minority ethnic communities is so rewarding. The sector gave me 25 years of wonderful opportunities and I am keen to repay this by giving back as much as I can.”

Dawn Ward CBE, CEO and Principal of Burton and South Derbyshire College said: “I am thrilled for Everton and his family and am so proud he has been recognised in this way. His commitment to both BSDC and the Further Education sector as a whole is truly significant and this honour is an incredibly fitting tribute to him and his many achievements. Everton has contributed positively to the sector, the lives of so many young people and his community throughout the years, making this prestigious accolade so fitting and deserved.”
