Catering and hospitality students host Chinese New Year celebrations

07 February 2019

On Wednesday 6th February, Burton and South Derbyshire College catering and hospitality students brought the Chinese New Year celebrations to The Mulberry Restaurant.

Chinese New Year is the most important holiday in Chinese culture and 2019 is the Year of the Pig, with celebrations taking place around the world between 5th and 19th February.

BSDC students were excited to host a Chinese New Year celebration at the College’s Mulberry Restaurant, with a deliciously traditional menu, including hoisin duck spring rolls, chicken in orange and schezwan vegetables. Sweet desserts are a key part of the celebrations as they express a wish for a sweet year, so the menu featured Chinese fried toffee apple, egg tarts and date tāng yuán. Guests could also treat themselves to the special Green Dragon cocktail.

The students brought the festivities to life not only by serving delicious Chinese cuisine, but also by wearing traditional clothing and decorating the restaurant with a range of props including hanging decorations, lanterns, fans and parasols.

Level 3 Hospitality and Leadership student, Loren Brigard organised the evening, including choosing food items for the menu, selecting the décor and designing the cocktail. Loren said: “I found organising the evening really interesting because of the culture. It was something exciting and different for me to try.”

Mulberry Restaurant Manager and Lecturer, Denise Oliver, commented: “Loren did a fantastic job planning the Chinese New Year themed evening and the students worked really hard to put on a brilliant night, which was very much enjoyed by everyone who attended. The themed evenings enable students to express their creativity and gain confidence, preparing them for a successful career in the catering industry.”

This is one of many exciting themed evenings that the Mulberry Restaurant hosts throughout the year, with upcoming themes including Valentine’s, Mardi Gras, Mad Hatter’s March Madness and Bollywood.
