Industry placement takes Beth beyond the 9-5

    22 March 2019

Level 3 Health and Social Care student at Burton and South Derbyshire College, Beth Kelly is currently gaining a unique insight into the challenging world of health and social care with an industry placement at DE Healthcare in Uttoxeter.

Beth is based in DE Healthcare’s ‘The Hub’ for two days per week, a unique community-based facility that gives individuals with disabilities the opportunity to socialise, take part in activities, improve their life skills and enhance their lives in a safe, professional and caring environment.

Speaking about her placement, Beth said: “I’ve enjoyed learning how to look after people with different disabilities. It has been interesting finding out what it means to have those disabilities, what people can and can’t do and what they need help with. I have enjoyed putting on the activities the most as we get service users from all different areas coming together to socialise. It’s really special as you get to see everyone communicating with new people.

“Taking part in this industry placement has also helped me find out what I can do with my own disability and how much I can push myself. This placement is helping me build the confidence, care and compassion needed to be a care assistant or support worker. It has helped me learn how to be confident around the different issues that you might come across in the healthcare and social care professions.”

Industry placements give students on Level 3 technical education courses the chance to put their knowledge and technical skills into practice in the workplace. This involves a 45-60 day placement in a relevant role with an employer where students can gain the skills they need in their future careers. Meanwhile, employers are able to nurture the next generation of workers while benefitting from an extra member of staff with fresh ideas.

Danielle James, Business Support Manager at DE Healthcare has been working alongside Beth during her placement, helping her gain the skills for her future career. Danielle commented: “When we were approached about an industry placement, I thought that it was a really good idea. The students get involved in every aspect of the role, supporting our clients day in and day out. It helps having an extra pair of hands, and it allows us to nurture them to the way we work so they may be able to join us as permanent employees in the long run.

“When people do a qualification and it’s just the theory side, they don’t get the full overview of what working in care is like. Industry placements are a good way to give young people looking to work in the care industry the chance to experience what it’s actually like. It’s not your average 9-5 job, but it’s very rewarding.”
