Toyota City study tour culminates in evening of culture
28 March 2019
A group of 15 Japanese students, two of their teachers and a delegate from Toyota City Council recently celebrated the end of a successful two week study tour at Burton and South Derbyshire College.
Representatives from the nearby Toyota Manufacturing UK plant and local councils in South Derbyshire were in attendance for the presentation ceremony and cultural exhibition evening.
During the evening, the students from Toyota City gave presentations about their experience in the UK as well as sharing their traditional Japanese culture, including a live dance performance. Homemade Japanese sweets and ‘water yo-yo’ gifts were also given to the visiting guests.
The College’s partnership with Toyota City, Japan, which is twinned with South Derbyshire, has enabled a range of exciting collaborative projects, including student exchange visits and the sharing of best practice. The study tour marked the fifth year of the Toyota City High Schools visit to Burton and South Derbyshire College.
The tour saw students from high schools across Toyota City taking part in a series of activities, including visits to Toyota Manufacturing UK (Burnaston), Lichfield Cathedral, Sudbury Hall and a sightseeing tour of London. The programme included English classes, a mini rugby world cup with sports students, British cookery day with hospitality and catering students, and a creative media workshop with creative students.
A team of International Ambassadors also joined the Japanese visitors throughout the study tour, providing support and friendship during their stay. Becoming an International Ambassador gives BSDC students the opportunity to enhance their employability skills by representing the College’s core values, while accompanying international learners on a range of activities, including cultural experiences.
Ann Walton, International Manager at Burton and South Derbyshire College commented: “We were delighted to welcome students from Toyota City to Burton and South Derbyshire College. Experiences such as this provide an opportunity for students to expand their cultural horizons and learn about different perspectives. The collaboration will benefit young people from both countries for many years to come, helping them develop employability skills for success in the global workplace.”
