Rae achieves her goal with distance learning

    24 May 2019

Distance Learning student, Rae Oldham being presented with a certificate by a College representative

Rae Oldham was celebrating at Burton and South Derbyshire College during Dementia Action Week (20th – 26th May) when she was presented with her certificate for the Distance Learning course, Level 2 Principles of Dementia Care.

Rae’s interest began when her husband, John was diagnosed with dementia in 2012 and she realised that more needed to be done to improve awareness and the level of care offered.

The journey to success for Rae was a challenging one. After completing the online course, unfortunately the training provider went into administration leaving her with no accreditation.

After unsuccessfully searching for another provider to take her on for 18 months, Rae contacted Burton and South Derbyshire College who had recently started offering a range of online courses. The College’s Distance Learning Team took Rae’s case on and went through the process of having her work re-assessed and moderated, resulting in her finally achieving the qualification.

Rae became a dementia champion for Dementia UK, giving talks about dementia awareness, and she is now a volunteer ambassador for the charity, where she supports admiral nurses. She is passionate about making a positive difference to people living with dementia in the community.

Rae commented: “It feels incredible to be holding this certificate! I’ve put so much work into it and it means a lot to me to have finally achieved the qualification. Thank you to the College for making sure all of my hard work didn’t go to waste. The course gave me so much knowledge which I’m passionate about passing on to others and making a difference.”

Burton and South Derbyshire College offers a range of Distance Learning courses, which allow people to gain accredited qualifications in their own home at a time to suit their personal and professional commitments. Many of the College's Distance learning courses also have a limited number of free spaces.
