Public Services students parade to remember

Public Services students from Burton and South Derbyshire College recently took part in a remembrance parade and service to mark Armistice Day on Monday 11th November, led by The Revd Dr Robin Trotter.

The event included a short march through the Memorial Gardens outside the College, culminating in a two minute silence at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.

Public Services students from the College also supported the Royal British Legion on the run up to Armistice Day. Level 3 students worked in teams to sell poppies to the local community in Coopers Square shopping centre between 25th October and 9th November.

Burton and South Derbyshire College’s Public Services courses give students the skills and qualities needed to be an effective member of the protective services, including the police, fire, ambulance, prison and military services. The College’s partnerships with local services ensure students are gaining real world experience that will be required for success in their future careers.

Brad Hodges, Level 3 Public Services student at Burton and South Derbyshire College commented: “We have really enjoyed helping the Royal British Legion with fundraising for the poppy appeal. It has been interesting listening to people’s stories about relatives who have served their country. I think it’s important that we remember the past and help to raise awareness and respect for the work that the armed forces do.”

Rob Stevenson, Public Services Lecturer at Burton and South Derbyshire College said: “It’s poignant to see future members of the public services remembering the past and helping the Royal British Legion to encourage people to remember those service personnel who have given their lives in wars and conflicts, past and present.”
