ESOL students explore creative writing
04 September 2019
A group of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students recently got creative, writing and publishing a book in one week.
The project was set by White Water Writers, who enable groups of up to ten students to write and publish their own novel within five days. Writers are given an idea for a story on a single side of A4. They take the idea, develop it, draft it, proof it, refine it and then publish it.
The students who are studying ESOL to improve their speaking, writing, listening and reading skills, worked together to write the book, ‘Mistaken: Finding a Killer’.
Baljinder Bains, Librarian Team Leader at Burton and South Derbyshire College commented: “The writing project was a huge success! It was exciting to see students develop their ideas, collaborate together and become more confident writers in a week. It was quite a challenge for them but they worked really well together to develop their ideas and proofread their work.”
Shaghayegh Habibi, who won a special prize sponsored by VitalSource for writing the most reviews said, “My reading challenge caused my friends to start reading my favourite books. Sharing my views was enjoyable; I want to continue reading. In addition to helping your understanding of English language, it gives you a lot of insight.”
