20 years of programme celebrated with a strawberry tea!

22 July 2021

Burton and South Derbyshire College held a special strawberry tea celebration in the College’s Mulberry Bistro on Wednesday 14th July 2021 to mark 20 years of its ‘Never Too Late To Learn’ programme and to launch the next series of sessions starting in September.

The programme had to be postponed last year due to the pandemic and so the event was a great opportunity for previous students to be reunited with one another and to enjoy a strawberry cream tea in the Covid-safe surroundings of the Mulberry Bistro, with refreshments and cake provided by Catering and Hospitality learners.

The Never Too Late To Learn classes give mature learners the opportunity to learn new things in a relaxing environment and in good company. The classes cover a variety of themes, including art and craft, poetry, history and days out.

There is also a companion course called ‘Look Closer’, which operates like a book club, following a literature reading programme in the morning session, with history sessions in the afternoon. In addition, green-fingered mature learners can opt for specific sessions focusing on gardens and gardening, including trips to places such as the Bluebell Arboretum at Smisby.

Never Too Late To Learn student, Margaret Fletcher who has been taking part in the programme for 15 years said: “The strawberry tea event has been fantastic; it’s been great to see people we haven’t seen for over 18 months! I enjoy the variety of different sessions on offer and particularly enjoy the history classes. There is always so much to do and you never know what could pop up. It’s also a chance to try something you might not have tried before and do something different.”

Course Lecturer, Robin Wood said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating 20 years of our Never Too Late To Learn courses after what has been a challenging year for us all. The Never Too Late To Learn classes are extremely popular with mature learners, particularly those who have retired and are looking to take part in fun activities and try new things in a welcoming environment. The variety of activities on this course is fantastic and it is wonderful to continue to learn new things in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.”
