A world of opportunities awaits BSDC students!

    05 August 2021

Students at Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) are set to gain access to exciting opportunities to travel and work after the College was successful in securing funding through the Government’s new Turing Scheme.

The scheme will enable the College to send 100 Travel and Tourism, Hair and Beauty and Catering and Hospitality learners to Malta, Spain, France and Italy over the next two years.

Students will embark on fully funded international work experience placements, approximately three weeks in duration. The College has also been granted a smaller number of two to three month internships in the same countries.

The Government’s Turing Scheme will see 40,000 students across the UK being able to study and work abroad. Over 120 schools, further education colleges and universities will be awarded grants from the £110m Turing Scheme, which will see 48% of places go to those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

At the heart of the Government’s post-Brexit vision is an ambition to create a truly Global Britain where we learn, work and trade with countries well beyond Europe’s frontiers. The Turing Scheme, which has replaced the UK’s participation in Erasmus+, gives young people the opportunity to benefit from working and studying abroad, while boosting our ties with international partners in the process.

Burton and South Derbyshire College is rooted in the local community but also undertakes a focused programme of international work, both domestic and overseas projects with partners in India, Korea, China, Malaysia, Thailand, USA, Saudi Arabia and Japan. International elements are woven into the College’s curriculum design and delivery so that a global view is developed in learners alongside their technical and vocational competence.

Ann Walton, International Manager at Burton and South Derbyshire College said: “We are delighted to have been awarded a grant under the Turing Scheme, which will enable a number of our domestic learners to undertake practical work experiences in a range of working environments throughout France, Italy, Spain and Malta. Developing an international mindset is a fundamental part of the learner journey at BSDC and this experience will empower learners with new skills and a global outlook, improving their chances of securing future job opportunities.”
