In March 2020, the College transferred to remote learning and teaching in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout this period, we have been busy developing new ways of teaching and learning that will help us transition out of lockdown.

In response to the latest Government guidelines, we plan to begin a phased re-opening of the College to some of our learners from Monday 15th June. Learners invited into the College will be individually contacted via text message, with further details available on CANVAS.

Our top priority will be to keep our learners, your loved ones and our staff safe. We will do this by:

  • Keeping the number of learners and staff in College to a minimum and for the shortest time possible
  • Small group sizes
  • Staggered start and finish times
  • Temperature screening in reception
  • Hand sanitiser dispensers in key areas of the College
  • One way system
  • Social distancing

At all times, we will be following the latest government guidance on the ongoing pandemic and its implications for education.

  • Which learners are being invited to return?

To keep everyone safe, we will not be able to welcome back every learner. We will continue to provide a broad offer of online learning, tutor support and set projects.

Those learners we are inviting to come back are:

    1. Learners who need a practical assessment to complete their course
    2. Learners who are coming back to us next year and who need help to get ready for this. These will include: Level 3 year 1 (Year 12) vocational learners who will complete bridging activities linked to a unit of study for year 2 of their study programme.
    3. We will continue to be open for vulnerable learners who need the educational and welfare benefits of College life or who may be safer in College than elsewhere.

We are asking all learners to check on CANVAS where details of the specific sessions will be listed. Learners should only come to College if they are directed to do so.

  • What if I haven't been invited to return yet?

If you do not fall into one of the listed categories, then it does not mean you are not important to us. It does mean that when things become more normal, we will have time to help you catch up with the learning you have lost. Right now, the best thing you can do is to continue to work with your tutors online. This will help you return to College successfully when the time comes.

  • Which sites will be open and when?

The campuses we plan to open for learners are:

    • Burton Town Centre Campus
    • The Stephen Burke Construction Academy (Swadlincote)

Provision will be available for our vulnerable learners at each of our open campuses.

Where we are assessing learners in vocational areas such as Hair and Beauty, Motor Vehicle and Construction, we will be operating strict social distancing as part of our safer ways of working.

When you return to College, and before you do anything else, you will have a specific health and safety briefing to ensure that you know what you need to do to keep yourselves and the people around you safe. All our staff will have undertaken safety guidance on COVID-19 before they return to work. Please see this video link.

Each campus will also have a Duty Manager on site daily to ensure our new systems of work are in place and that best practice is being followed.

  • Should I wear a face mask?

From Monday 15th June, it will be mandatory to wear a face mask while using public transport, so please make sure you do so while travelling to and from college. There is a face mask template available on CANVAS if you would like to have a go at making your own. However, whether you choose to wear your face mask whilst in college will be down to your personal preference.
