Students learn K-Beauty secrets with guest workshop!

    27 June 2022

Hair and Beauty students at Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) recently had the opportunity to learn K-Beauty techniques from South Korean guest lecturer, Professor Jeong.

The workshop is part of the College’s Staffordshire Sejong Hakdang, an official study centre for the Korean language in partnership with the South Korean Government, via the King Sejong Institute Foundation (KSIF).

The Staffordshire Sejong Hakdang, run by BSDC, currently delivers beginners and upper beginner classes in Korean, as well as a range of Korean-themed cultural workshops, including Taekwondo, K-dance, Korean cooking and Korean film.

During the workshop, students discovered more about the basics of K-Beauty and skincare techniques. Topics included skin care, youthful care, the beauty care of celebrities, bridal skincare and the makeup and wedding makeup of K-pop stars.

Professor Jeong is very well regarded in Korea and in addition to studying in Korea, she also studied at Central Saint Martins in London and the London College of Fashion for Stage Beauty and Special Make-up. She previously worked as Samsung’s advertising designer and has worked as a make-up artist on various K-Films, TV dramas and musicals.

Professor Jeong commented: “As K-pop stars such as BTS, Blackpink and EXO became more popular, the Korean beauty industry such as fashion, makeup and skincare became more popular among foreigners, as well as the interest in Korean cosmetics, and the products that were introduced by the artists.

“K-beauty focuses on showing your beauty naturally while maintaining the texture of your skin and maximizing natural beauty. Because it shows natural beauty rather than artificial makeup, makeup is important, but it is more important to take care of your skin, skin texture and eating habits, which are the basis of your daily makeup. I hope this session is helpful for those who were interested in K-beauty.”

Ann Walton, international Manager at BSDC said: “We are incredibly lucky that Professor Jeong visited BSDC to deliver this K-beauty workshop to both our Sejong participants and our own learners.  Korean skincare and make up techniques are increasingly popular in the UK and we were all excited to learn from someone with such amazing skills and experience. For our Hair and Beauty learners, it provided a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills, with a particular emphasis on international techniques.”
