Completed your first Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 course, but decided that you want to go in a different career direction? Don’t let that hold you back from enrolling on your desired course! If you’re aged 19 years or over, you may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to fund your tuition fees. Don’t worry, you won’t need to pay a penny back until you have finished your course and you can afford it.

    • How do advanced learner loans work?

Advanced Learner Loans are designed to help individuals aged 19 or above cover the costs of tuition for approved qualifications at levels 3 to 6 in England.

Here's a summary of how advanced learner loans work:

      1. Eligibility: There are no income or credit checks required. Anyone who meets the criteria can apply, regardless of their employment status.
      1. Application: Loans are paid directly to the college or training organisation. You need to apply through Student Finance England.
      1. Repayment: Repayments start once your income exceeds £25,000 per year. Interest is charged from the day you receive the first payment. You can also make extra repayments if you choose.
      1. Loan Write-off: Once entering repayment, you have 40 years before your loan will be written off. If you are studying an Access to Higher Education course and go on to take out Student Finance to fund a degree, any outstanding loan balance will be written off.
    • How do i apply for an advanced learner loan?

To apply for an Advanced Learner Loan, follow these steps:

      1. Check Eligibility: Ensure you meet the age and residency requirements. You must be 19 or older and living in the UK on the first day of your course.
      1. Course Confirmation: Verify that your course qualifies for the loan by obtaining a 'Learning and Funding Information' letter from your college or training provider.
      1. Register and Apply Online: Register on the Student Finance England website and complete the online application. You'll need the information from your 'Learning and Funding Information' letter.
      1. Provide Proof of Identity: Include your valid UK passport details or other required documents in your application. This could be your birth certificate or a share code.
      1. Submit Additional Information: If necessary, provide extra supporting information using the 'Evidence Return Form'.
      1. Confirmation: You'll receive a letter confirming your loan, usually within six to eight weeks if you apply online.

Remember to apply early to ensure your funds are available at the start of your course. If you need more detailed information, SLC's official website has all the specifics and guidance you need: Advanced Learner Loan: Overview - GOV.UK
