Public Services students take their skills to new heights

    11 May 2022

A group of thirteen Public Services students recently went on a rock climbing expedition, testing their skills at the Orange House climbing centre in Finestrat, Spain.

The adventurous students spent five days developing their fitness and skills in rock climbing, abseiling and mountaineering, under the expert tuition of qualified mountain instructors.

Students had to face challenging weather conditions, climbing in downpours of rain and working together as a team to overcome barriers.

The Orange House is located in Finestrat, a small village in the mountains behind Benidorm and a 35 minute drive from Alicante Airport.

Students were accompanied on the trip by their course leaders and a former Public Services student turned Met Police Officer in London, Shannon Upton, who joined the students to support and inspire them through the expedition.

Rob Stevenson, Course Leader for Public Services at Burton and South Derbyshire College said: “The students were met with some difficult weather conditions – locals were telling us that this was the worst rain they had seen in May in many years! However, they rose to the challenge and persevered until they achieved their goals. Expeditions like this one really help to develop students’ team work skills and resilience, which will be crucial as they start their careers in the public services.”
