College receives HSBC UK award for financial education

The Business and Kickstart departments at Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) have received a Smart Money Award from HSBC UK in recognition of the work they have done with the bank to assist students in managing their finances.

Jodie Johnson, Network Manager for HSBC UK and Debbie King, Senior Customer Service Officer for HSBC UK visited the College to present the award for providing regular sessions throughout the year to support financial education for young people.

BSDC’s Business and Kickstart learners regularly take part in sessions with local bank representatives to give them an overview of financial issues that will be important to them in future years, including managing their personal finances. 

Financial literacy is a critical life skill. HSBC UK runs award-winning financial education programmes for both young people and adults, offering offer face-to-face guidance around things like digital banking, fraud awareness and managing finances.

Craig Goldsmith, Curriculum Team Leader at Burton and South Derbyshire College said: “It’s important that young people are equipped with the information they need to learn how to effectively manage their personal finances. The sessions HSBC UK have been running for our Business and Kickstart learners have been extremely well received, providing them with an overview of the skills they will need as they gain employment and begin their careers.”
