BSDC Governor, Rajinder Kaur Mann OBE appointed as Deputy Lieutenant for the West Midlands

    01 April 2020

Burton and South Derbyshire College Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors, Rajinder Kaur Mann OBE has received notification of her successful appointment to the prestigious role as one of the West Midland’s Deputy Lieutenants.

Appointed to the role for three years, Rajinder’s new Deputy Lieutenancy position will support the Lord Lieutenant in being the Queen’s representative across the West Midlands with a specific focus on her home city of Wolverhampton. She will also undertake various public duties in promoting voluntary, charitable and youth activities in the region. The West Midlands is the second largest Lieutenancy in the country and as such is culturally and artistically diverse. The Lieutenancy is committed to developing this diversity and working with local communities to drive social cohesion.

Speaking of the role, Rajinder said: “It is a great privilege and honour to be appointed to this role and to serve the West Midlands and, particularly, my hometown of Wolverhampton. The Sikh faith has an intrinsic value of ‘seva’ (meaning service) and I hope that this role will enable me to serve the region representing the Lieutenancy in reaching and connecting with the wider community, raising awareness and promoting good causes.”

She continued: “On a personal note for me this is a great achievement for my family and community, and marks the success and recognition of migrant communities who have served in the West Midlands for generations. My late father, Bhag Singh Mann, who came to Wolverhampton in 1954 and worked in the Steel Industry would have been so proud of this honour. My mum, Ajit Kaur Mann and children, Aman and Piran are delighted that through this role I can do what I love best - continuing to serve and support individuals, organisations and communities across the West Midlands to positive effect.”

The formal announcement of Rajinder’s appointment was made yesterday in the London Gazette.
