Course overview
This course is for anyone wanting to learn the skills needed to be ready to fill the job roles of the up-coming evolutions in computers and the internet. It covers a range of areas, including Hardware and Networking infrastructures, Operating Systems, Cyber Security and the urgent need for professionals in these areas in the near future.
This is a two-year study programme, which is equivalent to two A Levels. You will either be entered onto the two course (19+ at enrolment), or two one year courses, which you will gain a qualification from each year. Both programme years will accrue UCAS points, should you choose a route of progression to a UK university, or apprenticeship. You will also have the option of gaining additional industry recognised qualifications from Microsoft, Cisco, Apple and alike. You will gain a theoretical understanding of IT networking (both Hardware and Software) and Cyber Security practices and develop practical skills using our custom designed and built, fully independent network.
You will study how computers and devices communicate, how networks are built and maintained and how to identify and investigate threats and vulnerabilities to computer systems using problem-solving skills to resolve many of these issues. This will give you an understanding of what would be expected in the workplace, along with the industry’s codes and practices related to client confidentiality, ethical hacking and cyber security.
This includes penetration testing and how to defend against and knowledge of different types of cyber-attacks executed on the internet. You will use a custom-built local network to practice these techniques and have access to the custom hacking simulation developed within BSDC called ‘War Games’, which aids in learning how hacking is done, and how to detect it over a network and respond. You will study to become a Cyber Security and IT Infrastructure Technician and have access to Cisco Cyber Security and networking interactive training resources which will enable you to stretch your skills to an advanced level.
